Bethune-Cookman releases 11-game football schedule

June 10, 2004

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - A match-up with legendary football power Grambling State in the 2004 Procter and Gamble Ohio Classic and the opportunity to beat archrival Florida A&M for an unprecedented third time awaits the Bethune-Cookman College football team in 2004. Athletic Director Lynn W. Thompson officially released the 11-game schedule Thursday afternoon.

“We want to say thank you to all our fans for their patience in regarding this announcement,’’ Thompson said. “But it stems from having a good problem: We have built such a solid football program that it has become increasingly difficult to schedule a non-conference game. We look forward to announcing a multi-year schedule in the next few weeks.”

“The schedule is a very challenging schedule for a highly respected, top 20 program,’’ Thompson added. “It reflects the advances we have made.”

In addition to facing Grambling State September 18 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Wildcats will face another member of the Southwest Athletic Conference when they travel to play Arkansas-Pine Bluff on September 11.

“It’s going to be challenging schedule for us,” said Head Coach Alvin Wyatt Sr. “It is one of the toughest schedules we have faced in years here at Bethune-Cookman College.”

“This schedule includes a team like Grambling with a seasoned quarterback and Arkansas Pine Bluff, whose head coach Mo Forte is former MEAC coach,” Wyatt added.

Rounding out the non-conference schedule is the September 4 season opener against Savannah State in the 51st annual Gateway Classic to be played in Jacksonville’s Alltel Stadium, home of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars featuring former Wildcats Rashean Mathis and Allen Suber.

Delaware State will be the Wildcat’s Centennial homecoming opponent on October 9. Bethune-Cookman will play two additional Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference games in Daytona Beach - September 25 against Norfolk State and November 13 against Howard.

The Florida Classic will be Nov. 20 in Orlando’s Florida Citrus Bowl. B-CC has won the last two meetings with Florida A&M.

The Wildcats went 9-3 last season under head coach Alvin Wyatt and qualified for the NCAA I-AA playoffs for the second straight year.

Season tickets are scheduled to go on sale June 21.

SCHEDULE NOTES: The Cincinnati appearance will be B-CC’s first since a 31-27 loss to Howard in 1999 … B-CC has not faced two SWAC schools in the same season since 1988 when it met Grambling State and Southern; the Wildcats lost both games but still won a share of the MEAC championship.
