“Coach Baker not only comes to Savannah State with an
overall winning coaching record, but he shares our belief that
student athletes are students first,” said SSU Athletic
Director Henry “Hank” Ford. “At Benedict
College, he had a graduation rate of 100% for junior college
transfer students and a 94% graduation rate overall. We expect
that he will be just as successful leading his players both
on and off of the court here at Savannah State.”
Baker is experienced in coaching at the national tournament
level having led the Benedict College women’s basketball
program with a 192-113 record overall since he was named to
the position in 2000. In 2003, his team finished third in the
Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Eastern Division
with a 19-9 record. He led the team to back-to-back Eastern
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships (EIAC) in
2001 and 2002. He was named EIAC Coach of the Year in 2001
and 2002.
Prior to his coaching position at Benedict, he served as head
coach of the Voorhees College women’s basketball team,
where he complied a 114-85 record during his seven years at
the program’s helm. His teams captured four EICA championships
and three NAIA Division I National Tournament appearances.
Baker, a 1990 graduate of Voorhees, served as director of
admissions at his alma mater. He began his coaching career
as the varsity girl’s basketball coach at Russell County
High School in Seale, Alabama.
