State's Massey selected to play in Hula Bowl
January 12, 2004
BALTIMORE, MD - Morgan State senior defensive back Sam Massey
(Waverly, GA) was recently selected to play in the 58th Annual
Hula Bowl All-Star Classic,
held January 17th, at War Memorial Stadium in Maui, Hawaii. Massey is the first
Bear to ever be named to the event, and this is also the second All-Star game
he has been invited to.
Sam Massey
He was also selected to play in The Villages Gridiron Classic, an all-star
game held on January 31 at the Villages Polo Stadium, in The Villages, Fla.
The game will be televised on ESPN at 12 noon (EST).
"This marks another accomplishment for our football program," said
MSU head coach Donald Hill-Eley. "Last year Visanthe Shianco showed we
can produce NFL quality players and the exposure we're getting is allowing
us to have an opportunity to get our players selected to bowl games."
Jim Tressel of Fiesta Bowl winner Ohio State and Ralph Friedgen of Gator Bowl
winner Maryland to coach the 2004 teams.
The game will be broadcast live on ESPN and Westwood One - CBS Radio in 151
countries and the armed forces.
Playing the game 3 weeks earlier than last year puts the Hula Bowl Maui squarely
in the most exciting part of the football season. By immediately following
the major college bowls, many senior players will be ready to participate in
this all-star classic and begin preparing themselves for the next phase of
their careers. Also, the NFL playoffs will be in full swing and NFL scouts
will be busy reviewing players for the upcoming NFL Draft.
"This will be an excellent recruiting opportunity for our program and
will provide exposure for the rest of our teams in the MEAC," said Hill. "This
is one small step for Sam, but one giant leap for Morgan State University."
