Funeral Services for Nicholas Murray, former Johnson C. Smith football standout,
are set for Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in Darlington High
School Gymnasium in Darlington, SC.
Murray, 23, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, in an automobile accident.
Rev. Wilbert White will officiate. Burial will follow
in Faith Memorial Gardens.
Murray was born in Florence County a son of L.C. and Cynthia Damon Murray.
He was a 1999 graduate of Darlington High School and continued his education
at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C., where he was a member of
the football team as a starter and defensive back.
Nick was recognized with
numerous honors in his football career. To name a few: He was named JCSU
Defensive Player of the Year in 2002. In 2003, he was named to every
Division II pre-season All-American Team, earning All-CIAA honors.
He earned
an invitation to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Ind., for
prospective draftees in March 2004.
Surviving are parents L.C. Murray of Florence and Cynthia Damon Murray of
Rock Hill; a sister, Narrisha Murray of Darlington; a brother, Ronnie
Bernard Sawyer of Darlington; paternal grandparents, Joseph B. and Shirley
Murray, and maternal grandmother, Martha Damon, all of Darlington; paternal
great grandmother Annie Lee Dowdy of Darlington; a niece, Sariya Jenae;
three uncles, Abraham Damon of Rock Hill, Joseph (Janice) Murray Jr. of
Darlington and Calvin (Sarah) Murray of the U.S. Army; two aunts, Bertha
(Richard) Holloman of Darlington and Joretta Murray of Florence; special
uncles Woodrow James of Crownwell, Conn., Elijah Murray of Hartford, Conn.,
and Walter James of Darlington; a host of granduncles and aunts, a host of
cousins; special friends, Pastor Deas of Florence and Keisha Lewis of
Washington, D.C.
