Hampton's Donovan
Rose Honored as Assistant Coach of the Year by the AFCA
December 5, 2003
Waco, Tex. – Hampton University Assistant Head Coach,
Donovan Rose, has been named as the 2003 American
Football Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year for
Division I-AA.
Donovan Rose
Rose, in his first year as assistant head coach of the Pirates
and defensive backs coach, just finished up his 13th season
with the Pirates football program.
The 1979 Hampton University graduate directs the Hampton University
Job Education Training (JET) Corps and H.O.P.E. (Hampton Opportunity
Program for Enhancement). He is also a former member of the
AFCA’s Exhibits Committee.
Since his arrival at HU as an assistant football coach in
1991, Rose has aided in the development of 10 All-Conference
(MEAC and CIAA) players, four All-Americans and two National
Players of the Year. His other coaching exploits include internships
with the Miami Dolphins, San Diego Chargers and New York Giants.
“Don is a very outstanding young coach,” admits
Hampton University head football coach, Joseph Taylor. “Being
the head assistant coach is a difference maker for the university,
and it was obviously easy to elevate him to his status for
this year as head assistant given his great background in this
field.”
Rose is married to the former Miss Hampton University (1981),
Sylvia Woody, a native of Tampa, Florida. They are the proud
parents of two children, Deja (15) and Donovan, Jr. (7).
