August 20, 2003
CHARLESTON, SC Over 100 supporters of South Carolina State University and
Savannah State University showed their support at the 2003 Lowcountry Classic Press
Luncheon held at the Outback Steak House on Sam Rittenberg Drive. City of Charleston
mayor Joe Riley was on hand as well as other members of the Charleston City Council
and the Charleston County Council.
The September 20th meeting between South Carolina State University and Savannah State
University will bring the two teams together for their tenth meeting and their first
meeting in the Lowcountry.
“This event provides a great opportunity to bring HBCU football to the city of
Charleston,” Savannah State University Athletics Director Henry ‘Hank’ Ford said. “And
we have a chance to begin something really, really special here.”
SCSU head coach and athletics director Oliver ‘Buddy’ Pough was pleased with the
support of the local alumni, which total more than 20,000, and welcomed the opportunity
to bring Bulldog football to them.
“This is the kind of idea that we need to develop and transform into something that we
can do every year,” Pough said. “For the number of alumni that we have in the area, we
are glad to have this opportunity to bring SCSU football to them.”
The 2003 Lowcountry Classic football game will kickoff at 4:00 p.m. at Johnson Hagood
Stadium in Charleston, S.C. Ticket information is available at the SCSU Ticket Office
