Mooney's last public appearance was at the SIAC
pre-season football luncheon in July. "I have
cancer," he told those in attendance. "But I'm
fighting it. I just couldn't keep sitting around
the house so I decided to come back to work. I
really love this conference."
Mooney was presented a basket by CAU Athletic
Director Brenda Edmond on behalf of the school
and the conference athletic directors.
A Vietnam veteran, Mooney had worked for several
HBCUs in his long tenure as a sports information
director and received a bachelor's degree in
applied science from Fayetteville State University.
His hires included stops at Fayetteville State,
Norfolk State University, Fort Valley State
University and North Carolina A&T.
He was working his second tour of the conference,
having sojourned with previous SIAC Commissioner
Wallace Jackson before working about a year
with Morris Brown College and then returning
to the conference where he served as Assistant
Commissioner under Robert Vowels. " Mr. Mooney
was the heart and soul of the SIAC conference
office," said Vowels. "His spirit and dedication
will never be replaced."
