Allen University Celebrates First Football Homecoming in 33 years

COLUMBIA--In its second season of competition, Allen University's
Fighting Yellow Jackets will be playing in their first homecoming
game in 33 years on Saturday, September 28, 2002, at 1:30 p.m.
in Charles F. Bolden Stadium.
This year's homecoming theme is "Buzzin' AU: Homecoming 2002." The
following is a complete list of activities and events for homecoming
week, September 23 - 29, 2002. Unless otherwise indicated, all activities
will be held in the John Hurst Adams Gymnatorium.
- Thursday, September 26 -
The Coronation of Miss Allen University, Miss Twanna Drummond, will
be held on Thursday, September 26, at 7 p.m. A Coronation Ball will
follow.
- Friday, September 27 -
Friday, September 27 will serve as "Alumni Career Day." Between 9
a.m. and 4 p.m., alumni will serve as guest lecturers and visitors
in many classes.
University President Dr. Charles E. Young, will host a reception
for alumni between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. in Arnett Hall.
Alumni registration for the weekend will be held between 4 p.m. and
7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Northeast, 7510 Two Notch Road.
The AU Comedy Jam, featuring comedians from the Black Entertainment
Television (BET) series "Comic View," will be held at 7 p.m. Tickets
for the event are $5 for students with college ID and $10 for the
general public.
An alumni reception will be held between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. at the
Holiday Inn Northeast.
- Saturday, September 28 -
An alumni breakfast will be held at 7:30 a.m. in the dining hall.
The Homecoming Parade, which will travel up Harden Street, will begin
at 10 a.m.
"Allenites Remember: An Oral History Project," will serve as an opportunity
for Allen alumni who had participated in prior homecoming celebrations
to share their stories for posterity. The event will be held at 11:
30 a.m. in the J.S. Flipper Library.
Allen University"s first homecoming football game in 33 years will
be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Charles F. Bolden Stadium. The Allen
University Fighting Yellow Jackets will face the Warriors of Webber
International University, Orlando, Fla.
Yellow Jackets Step-O-Rama, a step show featuring representatives
from eight of the nine historically Black fraternities and sororities,
will be held at 7 p.m.
An alumni dance will be held at 8 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Northeast.
- Sunday, September 29 -
The Homecoming Worship Service will be held at 9 a.m. The speaker
for the event will be the Reverend Hezekiah D. Stewart Jr., '69,
founder and executive director of the Watershed Human and Community
Development Agency Inc. in Little Rock, Ark.
The Yellow Jackets Athletic Program is governed by the Eastern
Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (EIAC) of the National Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (NAIA).
Founded in 1870 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Allen
University is an academic community whose mission is to provide education
with a strong commitment to teaching and community service. Allen
-- the oldest historically Black university in South Carolina established
by African Americans -- is accredited by the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools.
