Shaw University has released its football schedule for the
2003 season. The schedule features four home games, five away
games and one neutral site game, for a total of 10 games. The
Bears will participate in NCAA football for the first time
since 1978.
The Bears open the season at home at John Baker Stadium against CIAA western
division opponent, the Blue Bears of Livingstone, August 30 at 6:00 p.m. A
few familiar faces grace the Bear schedule from last seasons club schedule,
starting with crosstown-rival, the Falcons of St. Augustine’s on September
20. The Bears beat the Falcons last season 17-16. On September 27, the Bears
will face Edward Waters in the second annual Willie E. Gary Classic in Jacksonville,
FL. Shaw lost that game 31-10. The Bears will also face the Warriors of Webber
International in the last game of the season on November 8, whom the Bears
defeated 35-31.
The Bears first eastern division game will be against the Bulldogs of Bowie
State, October 11 and from that point will play three-straight eastern division
match-ups, including the Panthers of Virginia Union (Oct. 18), the Vikings
of Elizabeth City State (Oct. 25) and on homecoming, the Trojans of Virginia
State (Nov. 1).
The Bears played a club schedule last season and finished 7-3.
