TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Junior Erin Voeltz threw a rare perfect
game for No. 5 seeded Georgia Tech to compliment the nine runs
the Yellow Jackets put up against No. 8 seed Southern in the
fifth and final game of the NCAA Region 8 Softball Tournament's
first day.
"I felt good today," Voeltz said. "My pitches
were moving. My catcher was calling a good game. My defense
was making the plays when they put the ball in play."
Tech exploded for eight runs in the second inning and then
added one run in the fourth inning to account for its scoring.
A two-run home run by junior Tasha Waugh started the scoring
barrage for Tech in the second.
"I am just glad we ended the day like that," Georgia
Tech coach Kate Madden said. "It gives us a lot of confidence
heading into tomorrow. We have a good team and they deserve
to be able to play into the weekend so I am glad we ended the
day the way we did."
The game was called in the fifth inning when the run rule
was invoked. Voeltz improved to 13-6 on the season while J
Roberts (6-7) took the loss for Southern. Southern is the first
team eliminated from the tournament.
