2003 Division I Women's Softball: Alabama 10, Southern 1
May 15, 2003
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- No. 1 seeded Alabama won game two of the
NCAA Region 8 Softball Tournament 10-1 in five innings over
No. 8 seed Southern University, scoring five runs in the bottom
of the fourth to trigger the run rule here at the Alabama Softball
Complex.
"We were a little sloppy at first. Maybe it was jitters,
but after that the hitting was excellent," Alabama head
coach Patrick Murphy. "We wanted to be able to use all
three pitchers like we have all year long, so it was nice to
see Jennifer Wright get the complete game."
The Tide's big inning was keyed by back-to-back homeruns from
senior Lacy Prejean and freshman Staci Ramsey. Prejean's solo
shot was the 300th in school history. She also had the 299th
homerun in school history when she drove one past the fence
in the third inning for a solo shot. With two home runs and
a triple in the first inning, Prejean broke the stadium record
for total bases (11) and tied the stadium and school record
with two homeruns in a game. Freshman Dominique Accetturo also
had a good day at the plate, coming away with three hits in
four innings of work.
Alabama struck early, posting two runs in the first inning
and then three more in the third. Southern had opportunities
early, but couldn't seem to capitalize on them, leaving six
batters stranded through five innings. Sophomore Jen Wright
picked up the win (10-9) while freshman Samisha Bledsoe took
the loss (12-8).
Alabama returns to action Friday at noon against Illinois.
Southern faces Georgia Tech tonight (May 15) at 7:30 p.m.
