SCSU's Thurman Zimmerman Named MEAC Rookie Of The Year

Greensboro, NC - Thurman Zimmerman of South Carolina State University
has been voted the 2002-03 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie
of the Year by the conferences basketball coaches & sports
information directors and Zimmerman headlines the men’s
MEAC All-Rookie team.
Zimmerman won the Rookie of the Year voting with a score of
83 out of a possible 95 points. Deke Thompson of Coppin State
University finished second in the voting with 28 points.
Zimmerman, a 6-5 sophomore guard in his first year of collegiate
basketball from Columbia, South Carolina has made an impact
for the Bulldogs. Zimmerman has averaged 15 points and 7.4 rebounds
per contest this season and leads his team in field goal percentage
at 51%.
Joining Zimmerman on this MEAC All-Rookie team that is made
up of all backcourt players are Thompson, Jeff Granger of Hampton
University, Tyrone Green of North Carolina A&T State University
and Aaron Wellington of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Thompson, a 6-0 freshman guard from Tulsa, Oklahoma, has averaged
9.8 points and 2.12 assists per game while shooting 43% from
behind the three-point arc. Granger, a 6-3 freshman guard from
Newark, New Jersey, has averaged 8.1 points while shooting almost
40% from long range. Green, a 5-11 freshman guard from Washington,
DC, led the Aggies in scoring with 13.1 points before an injury
to his hand ended his season. He also led the team in assists
with 2.9 per game. Wellington, a 5-11 freshman guard from Chicago,
Illinois, led his team in steals with 1.32 per contest and is
second in scoring with 13.4 points.
