Greensboro, NC Kim Watson of Florida A&M University
has been voted the 2002-03 Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference Player of the Year by the conferences
basketball coaches & sports information directors and
Watson headlines the All-MEAC first team.
One point was the difference between Watson and player
of the year runner-up LaShondra Dixon of Hampton
University. Watson finished with 51 points out of a
possible 100 and Dixon finished with 50.
Watson, a 6-3 senior center from Clewiston, Florida has
had a stellar season; through games played on February
25 Watson is averaging a double-double with 18 points
and 10.5 rebounds per contest. She also makes 58% of
her field goal attempts and averages 1.12 blocks per
game.
Joining Watson in the backcourt of the All-MEAC first
team is LaShondra Dixon of Hampton University and Mandy
Clark of Delaware State. Dixon, a 5-5 senior guard
from Sparta, Georgia, was the conference’s preseason
player of the year and has lead a very strong Lady
Pirate basketball team to a 14-1 conference record
while averaging 16.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists
and 2.3 steals per game. Clark, a 5-7 sophomore guard
from Baltimore, Maryland, has been great for the Lady
Hornets all season. She’s averaged 15.8 points, 3.6
steals, 3.4 assists and 4.1 rebounds.
In the frontcourt with Watson is Courtney Kirk of
Howard University and Lynetta Sullivan of Hampton
University. Kirk, a 6-0 senior forward from Fairfield,
Alabama, has averaged 14.6 points, 6 rebounds and 1.4
blocks for the Lady Bison. Sullivan, a 5-10 senior
guard from New York City, has been named MEAC player of
the week twice the season and has averaged 10.7 points,
6 rebounds, 2.2 steals and has shot 45% from the field.
