Hampton's Jerome Mathis Advances to the
Finals in 200M Dash

Sacramento, Calif. - Hampton University men's track &
field/football student-athlete, Jerome Mathis, advanced to the finals of the
Men's 200-meter dash at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on
Thursday evening in Sacramento, California.
With a qualifying time of 21.09 seconds, second place in the
#2 heat in the preliminaries, Mathis qualified along with Florida A&M's
Sheldon Morant for the semifinals later on in the day on Thursday ...
showing the experience and competition available within the MEAC.
In the semifinals, Mathis exploded off of the line for the
second place time overall ... including winning his own heat (#1) ... with a
finishing time of 20.72 seconds. His time was just behind overall leader,
Stanford Routt, from the University of Houston with a time of 20.51 seconds.
Mathis, a first-year and rising track star, won the
200-meter dash at the 2003 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor
Track & Field Championships, on his way to being named Most Outstanding Male
Athlete for the annual event.
Mathis will look to claim the Men's 200-meter dash
championship title on Saturday afternoon at California State University at
Sacramento.
