Winston-Salem State Announces 2003 Football Schedule

January 20, 2003

Winston-Salem, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Department of Athletics has announced that the 2003 Ram Football schedule has been finalized. The ten-game schedule is highlighted by two non-conference games to start the season as the Rams will face Carson-Newman at Bowman-Gray Stadium in the 2003 Hall of Fame Game, and the Rams will then travel to Fort Valley State.

The Hall of Fame Game versus Carson-Newman will pit the Rams against a team that made it to the round of eight in the 2002 NCAA Division II football playoffs, and handed the Rams a 47-35 loss last season. The game versus Fort Valley State will mark only the third time that the two teams have faced one another with the Rams emerging victorious in both of the previous contests.

The Rams will also take on West Virginia Tech. in 2003 as well. The Rams trip to Morgantown, WV will mark the first time that the two teams have squared-off against one another.

The other highlights of the 2003 schedule include the annual CIAA conference match up with North Carolina Central that will see a change of venue. The Eagles and Rams will square off in a neutral-site game in Atlantic City, NJ. The Rams and Eagles have secured a three-year deal with the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Bureau to play the annual WSSU -vs- NC Central contest in Atlantic City. The game between the Rams and Eagles will be known as the "Boardwalk Classic" and will help to provide the teams with exposure in the North-East.

As well the Rams will have the full slate of eight CIAA league contests on the schedule as they look to regain their place atop the CIAA football throne, including a much-anticipated match up versus 2002 CIAA Champion Fayetteville State University. The Rams and Broncos battled last season in a closely-contested game that the Broncos eventually won in four overtimes.

WSSU season tickets will go on sale in mid-June of 2003, and more information can be obtained by calling the WSSU ticket office at 750-3220 or the WSSU Office of Sports Information at 750-2143.
