2002 SBN Black College
All-American Team Announced
January 17, 2003
The Grambling State Tigers lead the way with six players selected
as members of the 2002 SBN Black College All-American Team.
Grambling State University quarterback, Bruce Eugene was named
the SBN/Doug Williams Offensive Player of the Year. Bethune-Cookman
College defensive back RaShean Mathis was named SBN/Mel Blount
Defensive Player of the Year and Grambling States Doug Williams
was named SBN/Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year.
Bruce Eugene, Grambling State University, SBN/Doug Williams Offensive Player of the Year The sophomore quarterback set a new Grambling State single-season passing record with 4,070 yards and 40 touchdowns. He also ran for 510 yards and nine scores. Eugene was a finalist for the 2002 Walter Payton Award.
RaShean Mathis, Bethune-Cookman College, SBN/Mel Blount Defensive Player of the Year The senior defensive back set a new I-AA single season record with 14 interceptions and 455 return yards. Mathis won the 2002 Buck Buchanan Award as the nations top defensive player in Division I-AA.
Doug Williams, Grambling State University, SBN/Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year On the way to capturing his second straight SBN Coach of the Year honor Williams led the Tigers to an 11-2 record and their second consecutive SBN Black College National Championship.
The 2002 SBN All-American Team will be honored at the BCAA 29th Anniversary Banquet on Saturday, March 1, 2003 at the Grand Hyatt, Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia. The gala will be hosted by Hollywoods vivacious diva Vivica A. Fox and Ty Miller, AURN Director of Sports.
