NCAA Approves Savannah State Move to Division I
August 24, 2002
Savannah State University has been approved for full NCAA Division
I status effective September 1, 2002.
SSU originally petitioned the NCAA in 1999 and was granted
permission to move up to Division I-AA in football and Division
I for the rest of its sports. The primary criteria for completing
the move was to sponsor fourteen sports. This meant that SSU needed
to add five new sports to its existing nine sponsorsed sports.
In May, 2001, Hank Ford was hired as athletics director and
was immediately faced with the task of completing the move to
Division I. In January, 2002, Ford added five new sports to the
SSU sponsorship list and expanded three existing sports to bring
the sports sponsorship total to 17.
Savannah State nows sponsors intercollegiate sports in football,
baseball, basketball (M&W), cross country (M&W), golf
(M&W), tennis (M&W), indoor track and field (M&W),
outdoor track and field (M&W), women's softball, women's bowling
and women's volleyball.
