April 26, 2003
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- North Carolina Central University senior sprinter Jason
Smoots edged Dabryan Blanton of Oklahoma to win the college men's 100-meter
dash at the 109th Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, PA.
After running stride-for-stride much of the race, Smoots pulled away from
Blanton at the tape with each receiving identical times of 10.44 seconds.
Smoots, a six-time NCAA National Champion, is the first Eagle to win the 100m
dash at the prestigious Penn Relays.
Smoots then teamed up with Steven Enoch, Detric Branch and Brian Hope to
place third in the college men's 4x100m relay with a time of 40.46 seconds.
The Eagles finished just one-hundredths of a second behind second place
Mississippi (40.45), but outran teams from South Carolina State, Middle
Tennessee State, Clemson, Ohio State and Saint Augustine's in the relay
final.
Florida A&M won the event with a time of 40.19.
St. Augustine's Anwar Moore won the men's 110-meter hurdles championship beating
Texas A&M's Chris Pinnock by .11 seconds. Moore was runner-up in this event
