Five
HBCUs Prepare for NCAA Div II Tennis Playoffs

The NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Tennis Committee has
selected the teams and 16 first- and second-round sites of
the 2003 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships. The
first- and second-round tournaments will be conducted May 2-4,
with
the winner of each first- and second-round tournament
advancing to the finals in Altamonte Springs, Florida, with
the Central Florida Sports Commission and the Sunshine State
Conference serving as co-hosts, May 8-11.
Five teams from HBCUs have been selected. Men's teams from
Johnson C. Smith and Fort Valley State and women's teams from
Clark Atlanta and Fayetteville State received automatic bids
by winning their conference championships. Morehouse was also
invited to play in the South Regional Tournament.
JCSU's Golden Bulls will take on the Ospreys of the University
of North Florida in the first round at 9:30 am. The Armstrong Atlantic
State University Pirates, a member of the Peach Belt Conference, received
the No. 5 overall regional seed and will play the fourth-seeded Lees-McRae
College Bobcats in the first round at the UNF Tennis Complex
at 2:30 pm.
The winners of the first-round matches will
play in the regional championship May 3 at UNF.
Fort Valley State, SIAC men's champion, will travel to Valdosta,
GA to face Valdosta State while Morehouse visits Gulf South
Champion West Florida
in Pensacola in first round action in the South Region.
Women's pairings have Clark Atlanta playing in Arkadelphia,
AR against the host Lady Tigers of Ouachita Baptist in the
South Region Friday, May 2, at 1 p.m. Fayetteville State
meets Georgia
College and State University in Milledgeville, GA on May 2
at 11:00 a.m..
