South Carolina State 47, Hampton 41ORANGEBURG, S.C. - South Carolina State University took a historic 47-41 win over Hampton University, Saturday. Sophomore running back Trevin Smith scored on a 14-yard TD run in overtime to claim the Bulldogs' first-ever win over the Pirates and keep the team in the hunt for a MEAC title."It's about the biggest win we've had here in a while," S.C. State head football coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough said of the overtime victory. "And it gives our kids something to continue to play for." After falling behind 17-6 at the end of the first quarter, SCSU rebounded to tie the game at halftime, 20-20. Both teams scored a touchdown in each of the last two quarters to tie the game at the end of regulation at 34-34. "It seemed that neither team could stop the other in the closing minutes," Pough said of the tough win. "We knew we were in foror a long day because Hampton was so huge up front." The tough win turned out to be a positive for Bulldog quarterback Reese McCampbell, who had been struggling throwing the ball this season. However, McCampbell rebounded, racking up 261 yards through the air, including three TD passes in the game, all of which were in the second half. "They took the run away, and we couldn't hit a pass," Pough added. "But he [McCampbell] was pretty good down the stretch and in OT." The Bulldogs scored first in the overtime on a 14-yard pass from McCampbell to King. The Pirates would rebound, however, scoring a touchdown of their own on a 1-yard run by Rian Thompson. The Pirates failed to score on their next possession as Bolden missed a 35-yard field goal, his only miss of the contest. A 14-yard run by SCSU"s Trevin Smith sealed the Bulldog win and gave SCSU the overtime victory. After a rough start, the Bulldog offense racked up 500 yards of total offense, including 125 rushing yards from sophomore running back Trevin Smith. Wide receiver Michael King also had a good outing totaling 54 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns. "Trevin had a good day. He had been struggling, but really played today," Pough said of the Monck Corner, SC native. "I"m happy for for [WR Michael] King also. He's been plugging all year as a wide receiver and long snapper and I was glad to see him get going." Freshman Chris Burgess led the SCSU receiving corps with 81 yards and a touchdown, while Michal King added 54 yards and a pair of TDs. Senior wideout Terrence Metcalf also added 85 yards. The Pirates were also impressive in the contest totaling 470 yards of total offense. Quarterback Timothy Frazier totaled 293 yards passing on the day. Zuriel Smith led the Pirate receiving corps with 142 yards and a touchdown. Pirate kicker Tellis Bolden was also impressive in the contest as he was 5-5 on PATs and 2-3 on field goals. With the win over Hampton, S.C. State (6-2, 3-1 MEAC) remains in the hunt for a MEAC title as Bethune-Cookman, which is idle this weekend, remains the only undefeated team in MEAC play. The Bulldogs will next head to Dover, Delaware to face Delaware State while Hampton (5-3, 3-1 MEAC) will head to Tallahassee, Florida to face Florida A&M.
