Morehouse 19, Lane 16

The Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College gave a capacity crowd of 15,973 more football than they came to see on Saturday afternoon, by having to go to overtime before securing a 19-16 victory over the visiting Dragons from Lane College.

Morehouse was on offense first, in the overtime, and got a 35yd field goal, his second of the day, from place kicker Byron Archibald. So from there it was up to the Maroon Tiger defense to stop a Lane offense that had scored all 16 of its points in the second half.

Fortunately for Head Coach Willard Scissum his defensive unit had one more stop left in them.

The Maroon Tigers broke out to an early lead, courtesy of Archibald's first field goal (19 yds) with 5:13 to go in the first quarter. And took a 10-0 lead into the intermission behind a 3 yd touchdown run by running back John David Washington (16 car, 62 yds, 1TD).

A halftime quarterback change sparked a Dragon offense that had been held scoreless, thus far. But with Tim Lawson (33 rush, 64 pass) now under center, the Dragons took the second half kickoff straight down the field. Running back Quanta Gregg (15 car, 54 yds) capped off the drive with a one-yard plunge. A two-point conversion run by Lawson cut the margin to two points 10-8.

Morehouse answered back when fullback Aaron Epps took a 2-yd screen pass from Duwuan Burton (9-14, 147 yds, 1TD) into the end zone with 2:31 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

The extra point attempt was blocked by Lane and returned for a Safety by linebacker Kerrick Sanders. With the score now at 16-10, Lane scored once more with 5:22 remaining in the 4th quarter, when Boss Sams scampered in from 4 yds out.

With the score now knotted at 16, Coach Miles Brandon decided to once again try for the two-point conversion. The Tim Lawson pass fell incomplete.
