Stillman 35, Texas Southern 28

TUSCALOOSA---The Inaugural Druid City Football Classic: The Battle of the Tigers lived up to its billing as the Texas Southern University Tigers and the Stillman Tigers meet at Stillman Stadium and fought tooth and claw to the end. But, the underdog non-scholarship Division III Stillman College Tigers shocked the Division I-AA Texas Southern University Tigers by defeating the Tigers from Texas 35-28.

Texas Southern struck first as Jacob Chavan connected with Cortez Hankton with a three-yard touchdown pass, to cap a 10 play, 50-yard drive with 51 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Vince Patrick's extra point kick gave TSU an early 7-0 lead.

At the 6:48 mark in the second quarter John James completed a six-play, 36-yard drive with a two-yard scoring run. The Patrick extra point kick increased the TSU lead to 14-0.

The Stillman College special teams set up the Tigers first score. Warigus Prude recovered a Corey Alexander fumbled punt at the TSU 15-yard line with 2:37 remaining in the second. One play later Riccardo Thomas put Stillman on the scoreboard with a 15-yard touchdown run. Eric Beech's extra point kick cut the TSU lead to 14-7.

On the next TSU possession the Stillman defense forced a three and out for negative 15-yards. With 1:16 left in the first half Tyvun Green utilized the good field position as he hooked up with Drenzo Payne for a 24-yard touchdown strike. The Beech extra point tied the game at 14-14.

The Stillman defense came to life in the second half, recording three interceptions. Early in the third the Tiger defense had a bend but don't break attitude, forcing three TSU punts and one interception.

At the 4:40 mark Green found Anthony Hall for a 15-yard touchdown pass to cap a five-play, 72-yard drive. Beech's extra point put Stillman ahead 21-14 and the Tigers never trailed again.

With 30 seconds remaining in the third Jermaine Blakely intercepted a Chavan pass and rumbled 14-yards to set up Stillman's fourth touchdown of the game. With 14:50 remaining in the fourth quarter Green connected with Timithoy Cole for an 11-yard strike. Beech's extra point extended the Tiger lead to 28-14.

It seemed that the Stillman Tigers had control of the game with a 14 point lead, but the Tigers from Texas had other things in mind. At the 13:12 mark Carlos Pierson found a wide open Hankton for a 42-yard touchdown strike. Patrick's extra point cut the Stillman lead to 28-21. Less than a minute later Pierson connected with Lynn Rivers for a 32-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 28-28.

With 10:26 remaining in the game Stillman's Cole scored the final touchdown of the game as he hauled in a 17-yard pass from Green. Beech's extra point gave the Tigers a final score of 35-28.

Green recorded a game high 196 passing yards and four touchdowns. TSU wide receiver Hankton led with 158 yards and two touchdowns on 10 receptions. Stillman's Kenneth Davis rushed for 17 yards on eight attempts. Texas Southern's Leonard Mack recorded a game high eight tackles and two for a loss. Stillman All-American Brenden Givan and senior Medaris Benson led Stillman with seven tackles each. Givan also had two tackles for a loss and one pass deflections. Benson also a tackle for a loss.

Stillman will not return to action until Saturday, Nov. 2 as the Tigers travel to Jacksonville, FL to face the Edward Waters Tigers. Texas Southern will host Miss. Valley State next Saturday.
