Joe Taylor Earns 150th Career Victory
Hampton, VA – Travis Hailes turned in his second consecutive 100-yard
game and also added three touchdowns to lead the Hampton University Pirates
(4-2) to a 49-0 homecoming victory over the Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association’s (CIAA) Bowie State Bulldogs. The win marked the 150th
career victory for Pirate coach Joe Taylor.
Hailes, who was playing in just his second game of the season, dominated
the first half rushing for 88 of his game-high 107 yards as he scored
all three touchdowns before the break giving the Pirates a 21-0 lead.
That cushion proved to be all that Hampton would need.
Behind junior defensive end Isaac Hilton, the Pirate defense held the
Bulldogs (4-3) to a mere 36 rushing yards while sacking Bowie State
quarterbacks Maurice Hill and Jabali Smith seven times. Hilton broke
the Pirate record, which he tied earlier this season, by recording six
quarterback sacks for a loss of 44 yards as he racked up 10 total tackles
on the afternoon.
Hampton added four more scores to seal the game, including a 68-yard
strike from new starting quarterback Kerry Dixon to Jerome Mathis. Blanketed
by a Bulldog defender, Mathis made an acrobatic leaping catch for his
third touchdown of the season.
BSU quarterback Hill completed 13-of-26 passes for 140 yards but his
effort alone could not make a dent in the scoreboard as the Pirates
posted their first shutout since blanking Delaware State 21-0 in the
1999 season opener.
The Pirates return to the field next Saturday, October 19 when they
take on Norfolk State University in the Battle of the Bay. Kickoff is
scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
