Hampton 44, Delaware State 13

Dover, DE --- Carlton Morant rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown and Travis Hailes ran for 111 yards and two scores to lead Hampton to a 44-13 win over Delaware State Saturday.

The Hornets dropped their fourth straight game to fall to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the MEAC. Hampton improved to 3-2 and 2-0.

The victory was also Hampton's eighth in a row over the Hornets.

Delaware State scored first when linebacker Justin Mitchell returned a fumble by Hampton quarterback Timothy Frazier 75 yards for a touchdown with 12:17 left in the first quarter. The Hornets stretched their lead to 10-0 on a 38-yard field goal by Zach Bussey with 6:10 left in the opening frame.

Hampton cut Delaware State's lead to 10-7 when back up quarterback Kerry Dixon scored on a 30-yard run with 1:01 left in the first quarter.

Delaware State fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Hampton capitalized when Dixon capped off an eight-play, 35-yard drive with a one-yard plunge to give the Piates a 14-10 lead with 12:35 left in the second quarter.

Hampton stretched its lead to 20-10 when Brian Sawyer intercepted a pass by Delaware State quarterback Andrew Blackston and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown. The extra point attempt failed.

Morant scored on a 19-yard run to give Hampton a 27-10 lead with 5:16 left in the third.

Hailes added two scoring runs in the fourth quarter to secure the win for the Pirates. Hampton outgained Delaware State 490-279. The Pirates had 29 first downs, while the Hornets collected just 12.
