Wofford 7, South Carolina State 6

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The South Carolina State University Bulldogs took their first loss of the season in a heart-breaking 7-6 loss to the Wofford Terriers.

The Bulldogs’ loss is the first in the tenure of head coach Oliver ‘Buddy’ Pough and improves Wofford’s record to 2-0 for the third time since 1983.

“Overall, we just didn’t make enough plays,” Pough said. “But I though t our guys played hard offensively and defensively”

The Bulldogs took control of the tough game early in the second half on a 5-yard run by Derek Watson. The PAT by Guy DePalo, which was blocked, turned out to be critical, however, for the Bulldogs. Wofford took a 7-0 lead following a three-yard TD run by Trey Rodgers and the Jay Harvey PAT kick.

The Bulldogs’ kicking game, which had been a concern of Pough’s, turned out to be critical to the game. However, Pough didn’t place all of the blame at the feet of his kicker.

“We can’t give all the blame to DePalo,” Pough added. “There was problem with the snap that was critical to us.”

Pough was impressed with the Terriers’ tenacity and was complimentary to the Wofford team and staff.

“We have to credit Wofford, though,” Pough added. “They made the plays needed to stay in the ballgame.”

The Terriers’ score with 2:42 left in the third quarter ended a streak of seven games for the Bulldogs where opponents have failed to score in the second half.

S.C. State quarterback Reese McCampbell led the Bulldog attack amassing 120 yards rushing and 154 yards through the air. This is the third game in a row that McCampbell has totaled over 100 yards on the ground and in the air.

For the second straight game, the Terriers dominated the game on the ground amassing 227 yards rushing. J.R. McNair led the way for Wofford with 76 yards rushing.

Following their first loss as a head coach, Pough gave credit to his players for their performance even in the loss.

“Through that [lockerroom] door, there are some really disheartened players,” Pough said of his Bulldogs. “We’ll bounce back.”

Both teams will head to Georgia for their next contests. The Bulldogs (2-1) will head to Savannah to face Savannah State, while Wofford (2-0) will next take on Georgia Southern in their Southern Conference opener.
