Towson 49, Morgan State 28BALTIMORE, MD - Morgan State University had a hard time containing Towson University’s junior running back Mikal Lundy. Lundy had 21 carries for 94 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Bears fell to their crosstown rivals 49-28.In front of a record crowd of 8,517 in Towson’s newly renovated stadium, the Tigers’ offense pounced on the Bears in a variety of big plays. Towson finished the contest by racking up 494 yards of total offense and recorded their highest point production in nearly three years. Morgan State (0-2, 0-0 MEAC) fans had something to cheer about early as junior William Sherman (Cincinnati, OH/Withrow) took the opening kickoff 45-yards to help setup an 18-yard rumble by Bradshaw Littlejohn (Gaffney, SC/Gaffney). Late in the first quarter Lundy scored on a 4-yard dive to give the Tigers the lead 7-6. MSU’s special teams answered as sophomore William DeShazo (Durham, NC/Riverside) exploded for a 79-yard kickoff return to set-up Morgan’s go-ahead touchdown. T.J. Stallings (Randallstown, MD/Randallstown) scored on a 4-yard run and tight end Vishante Shiancoe (Laurel, MD/Blair) caught the two-point conversion to give the Bears a 12-7 lead. The Tigers (1-0) tied the score at 14-14 with 9:46 remaining in the half when tailback Matt Romeo scored on a 2-yard plunge. Towson took the lead for good following a mishap on special teams. MSU punter Jon Voroshilin (San Antonio, TX/James Madison) fumbled the snap and Allanthe Harrison scooped it up at the Morgan 30-yard line and sprinted to the endzone to give the Tigers a 21-14 lead. With 1:33 remaining in the half the Tigers scored when wideout Jamaal White took a 33-yard reverse to paydirt. The Bears came back to score the last points of the half when Stallings scored his second touchdown of the night from 3-yards out to cut Towson’s lead to 28-21. In the third quarter Towson quarterback Jay Amer took his team 89-yards in 8-plays capped by a 34-yard TD pass to Mikal Lundy to take a 35-21 lead. MSU’s offense put together a 64-yard drive but failed to convert on a 4th and one on the Tigers’ 7-yard line. The Tigers got back on the board at the beginning of the 4th quarter when Mikal Lundy scored a 2-yard touchdown to give the Tigers a 42-21 advantage. Littlejohn threw a 41-yard TD pass to senior Vishante Shiancoe for the Bears last scoring play of the contest with 11:36 remaining in the game. Towson ended the night with a bang as Amer threw a 70-yard TD pass to James Byroads to give the Tigers their final score and a 49-28 victory. Shiancoe led all receivers with 5 receptions for a career-high 115 yards and a touchdown. Littlejohn completed 11-for-16 passes with a touchdown, but he was also sacked 7 times. Stallings led MSU’s ground game with 10 carries for 35 yards. Defensively, the Bears were led by freshman Jason Whaley (Riverdale, MD/Parkdale), who made 7 tackles and had a sack. Junior Donrico Lewis (Nachitoches, LA/Lakeview) added 7 tackles, including 4 solo tackles. The Bears will return to action Saturday, September 14, 2002 when they take on Florida A&M University in the Proctor & Gamble River Front Classic at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
