CANDIDATES FOR SIAC COMMISH DOWN TO TWO

From 65 candidates who applied, the Committee from the SIAC's Council of Presidents has narrowed their search to two candidates. Those in the know say they couldn't disclose who the final two were other than to suggest that the number one prospect is "seriously sharp." There is also the possibility that the conference may expand soon. Sources reaching INSIDE say that Stillman College, which recently moved from Division III to Division II status, Edward Waters College and Lincoln of Missouri have expressed some interest in membershuip. And don't be at all surprised if the conference creates its own championship game in the not-to-distant future.

  • You might wonder why after five years in Atlanta, the Pioneer Bowl suddenly pulled up stakes and relocated in Tampa Florida where there is no physical SIAC or CIAA school presence. According to SIAC Interim Commissioner Cory Lima, it was largely a matter of money. Although the Bowl features champs or reps from both the CIAA and SIAC, it was the latter that bore the financial brunt of the game. According to Lima, putting on the contest costs the conference " between A$80 and $100,000". " The athletic directors met earlier this year and decided they would no longer foot the bill. So, it was either put the game on hiatus or find someone to take the game over."
  • The December 14th SWAC championship football game has some SIAC connections in a way. Both Doug Williams of Grambling and Anthony Jones of Alabama A&M once served as head coach at Atlanta's Morehouse College.
  • Clark-Atlanta University, Central State of Ohio, Livingstone and St Augustine will participate in the annual Ricky Williams cage Classic on the campus of CAU this Friday and Saturday. The matches should produce excellent basketball. The Marauders are coming to Atlanta with a 5-1 record, St Augustine is 2-2 and Livingstone comes in strong at 4-0.
  • Richard Cosby's seven year sojourn at Clark-Atlanta University apparently served him well. According to an article in the Birmingham News, the President of Alabama State noted that experience as a motivation for their decision to hire Cosby as their new Athletic Director.
