ALBANY STATE IN TWO GRID
CLASSICS
Looks like James "Mike" White's Albany State Rams will be
playing in two classic games this year. INSIDE has learned that two regular
season contests between the Rams and Miles scheduled for September 7th
and their November 9th contest with the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College
will be played in Chicago and San Diego respectively. The former game
is about a signature away from a done deal, according to Miles Athletic
Director Augustus James who says he and ASU AD John R Davis are working
together on the project. James said a formal announcement would be forthcoming.
The two teams would participate in the Skyway Toll Road College Football
Classic and that the game would likely be played in nearby Gary Indiana.
The Morehouse-ASU contest will be played November 9th in San Diego. Arrangements
have been finalized for the contest which is called the Gold Coast Classic
and is sponsored by the publishers of the San Diego News and Viewpoint.
- How much college football can one city take in the course of one day?
On September 28th, Atlanta will be the venue for FOUR college contests.
Two of the games, Morehouse vs. Bowie State and CAU vs. Fort Valley
are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. At 4p.m., the Big Blue of Tennessee State
and the Orange and Green of FAMU battle in the 14th Atlanta Classic
at the Georgia Dome. Then at 7p.m., the Bison of Howard University visit
the Wolverines of Morris Brown. That game is scheduled for Herndon Memorial
Stadium. Whew!
- Tuskegee's Rick Comegy revealed that the offer he got to coach at
Morgan State was a tempting one last year; one that he came very close
to accepting. "On the plane ride back to Tuskegee from Baltimore,
I pretty much had decided to take that job," said Comegy. He told
INSIDE that he changed his mind because of his loyalty to Tuskegee and
some promises he had made to the school's President Dr. Benjamin Payton.
Many of us also theorized that eventually, Tuskegee would make the big
leap into Division I. Last year, we got wind of Payton's personal interest
in moving up at some point. It won't be this year, however. Comegy is
in a rebuilding period after losing 25 seniors and at least four All
Americans.
- Kentucky State's head coach Donald Smith must think somebody somewhere
doesn't like him. He begins the first four weeks of his football season
on the road and none of the games are easy pickings. He opens against
Division IAA opponent Western Kentucky and then is back out on the road
the following week against another IAA foe Morehead State. The Thoroughbreds
then have to travel to Peach County Georgia to take on the Fort Valley
Wildcats, then end September against their third 1AA opponent in one
month when they battle the Lions of the University of Arkansas Pine
Bluff. Only after their classic game in Columbus Ohio October 5th against
Morehouse will the hometowners get a look at what's left of their team
when they host the Lane College Dragons October 12th.
- A little bit of family boasting to end this piece. A second cousin
of mine, Brian McGhee, is part of the revived football program for Shaw
University. The 6-1, 271 pounder is a native of Detroit where he enjoyed
an outstanding high school career. There may be a pro in my family yet.
