WSSU Lady Rams Earn
36 Point Victory Over Columbia Union
January 13, 2003
Winston-Salem, NC - Senior point-guard Lori Shelby once again
led the Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams to victory, this
time in dramatic fashion as the Lady Rams earned an 88-52 victory
over the Columbia Union Lady Pioneers on Monday evening in front
of over 100 fans in the CE Gaines Center.
Shelby put on a career performance as she tallied 19 points on
9 of 13 shooting, picked up seven rebounds, while standing only
five feet tall, dished out 13 assists and recorded two steals,
all while only playing 31 minutes.
Shelby was not alone as Rhonda Shears led all scorers with 21
points, putting on a shooting clinic, going 10 of 14 from the
floor while snatching five rebounds and recording a pair of assists.
Aletha Corpening also stepped up her play as she scored 12 points,
only missing from the floor five times, as the Rams easily rolled
over the winless Lady Pioneers (0-10).
What may be even more amazing than the individual scores posted
is that the Lady Rams' second leading scorer, Phinnie Matthews
never played in the game. Matthews arrived at the game late, due
to a doctor's appointment, and although she dressed for the contest,
was never inserted into the game.
The Lady Rams scored an astonishing 44 points in the paint in
the contest as Shears, Lashonda Horton and Kameesha Harris combined
for 34 points in the paint in the contest. The Lady Rams perimeter
game, which shot nearly 55% in the contest opened the lane for
the Lady Ram post players to work their magic, and work they did,
as they registered their most productive game of the season to
date.
The game, which held more meaning than normal for the Lady Rams,
as it was CIAA/WSSU Breast Cancer Awareness Day, was a welcome
victory to the Lady Rams and their fans, as they saw the Lady
Rams improve to 8-6 overall on a very emotion-packed evening.
The game started with Head Coach John Williams urging the crowd
to join him in a prayer for those people whom have been touched
in some way by Breast Cancer, and ended after the final buzzer
with the Lady Rams earning a 36-point victory.
The Lady Rams move to 8-6 overall and take their 4-1 CIAA into
Thursday's contest versus the Shaw University Lady Bears. The
CIAA rivalry will once again be rekindled at 5:30 pm on Thursday
in the CE Gaines Center.
