Lady Rams Win An Ugly One 58-49
January 11, 2003
Winston-Salem, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams
defeated the Livingstone College Lady Blue Bears 58-49 on Saturday
evening in what can be classified only as a wild-affair.
The Lady Rams trailed for the entire game, before tying the contest
and pulling ahead for good with 3:31 remaining in the second half.
The Lady Rams looked to be destined for the loss as they shot
an unimpressive 27% from the floor in the contest, going 6-30
in the first half (20%) and 11-33 in the second half (33%) and
being out-rebounded 48-25 in the game.
However, the Lady Rams showed their resilience, and as has been
the story all season, the suffocating WSSU defense did its job
and earned the Lady Rams an all-important CIAA league victory.
The Lady Rams forced a season-high 36 Livingstone turnovers, en
route to 14 points off of turnovers in the contest.
The WSSU shooting woes continued, however, the Lady Rams were
able to move to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the CIAA.
Pacing the Lady Rams was guard Phinnie Matthews, who tallied 19
points, leading all scorers, as she was 4-7 from the floor and
9 for 12 from the line in the contest. She had help from Rhonda
Shears who chipped in with 10 points, and Lori Shelby who contributed
eight points, five assists and six steals in the winning effort.
The Lady Blue Bears were led by Chloe McInnis with 13 points
and Kautzela Richards with 11.
The game was a drawn-out affair as the two teams not only combined
for 50 turnovers and 46 fouls, but had numerous stoppages in play,
and the game never had a real momentum to it except for the final
three minutes when Matthew and Shelby once again took over a game
by forcing turnovers and creating transition offense.
The Lady Rams will be in action again on Monday evening at 5:30
pm as they host Columbia Union in the CE Gaines Center.
