Shelby's Shot With 3 Seconds Left Leads Lady Rams To 64-63 Win

Winston-Salem, NC - Lori Shelby could not let Phinnie Matthews be the only Lady Ram to win a game on her final shot this season, as she took a page from Matthew's book and drilled a running jumper with only three seconds remaining to give WSSU a 64-63 win over the visiting Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University on Saturday.
At the time Shelby was only two of nine from the floor, and had been having an off night, but as any fan of basketball knows, shooters keep shooting, and that is exactly what Shelby did, much to the delight of the Lady Rams and their faithful fans.
Trailing by one with only 29 seconds remaining, the Lady Rams fouled JCSU's Annie DeRoy and sent her to the line to shoot the front end of a one and one. She proceeded to miss the free throw off the back iron and the Lady Rams' Rhonda Shears pulled down the defensive rebound. The Rams crossed mid court, and promptly took a time out.
Head Coach John Williams diagramed a play that called for Shelby to take the last shot of the game while using guard Phinnie Matthews as a decoy, and Williams proved his knowledge when Shelby hit the 14-footer in traffic to win the game.
The final score and the result were indicative of how the entire game progressed as the two teams would be tied 34-34 at the halftime break, and the lead changed hands six different times in the contest. The largest lead of the game would come with 4:43 left in the second half as JCSU led by a paltry five points. It was nip and tuck the entire way with the two teams recording nearly identical numbers in every statistical category.
Shelby would finish with nine assists and a mere nine points, two of them being the biggest points of the contest. She would be helped put by Matthews who tallied 16 points on the evening and pulled down seven boards while dishing out four assists, and Lashonda Horton who tallied a game-high 18 points.
Leading the way for the Lady Golden Bulls was Lauren Goss with 14 points and Joi Surratt with 12 points.
With the victory the Lady Rams keep their unblemished Western Division record (4-0 in the division), and improve to 11-7 overall and 7-2 in the CIAA.. The Lady Golden Bulls fall to 10-6 overall and 4-4 in the CIAA.
The Lady Rams will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to division rival Fayetteville State University at 5:30 pm.
