NCCU Lady Eagles Go Cold in Second Half, Lose to Wingate

DURHAM, NC ­ North Carolina Central University trailed Wingate University by just two points at halftime, but the Lady Eagles went cold from the floor and suffered an 80-63 loss to the Bulldogs at McLendon-McDougald Gym in Durham, NC.

Wingate junior guard Julie Law came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points as one of four Bulldogs to tally double-figures. Jessica Guarneri and Veronica Taylor recorded a game-high 17 points each, while Ginny Boggess added 12 points for Wingate (11-2).

NCCU (2-11) was topped by junior guard Tiona Beatty with 16 points, while senior guard Tiffany Foster contributed 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 assists.

Wingate held an 18-13 advantage at the 12:01 mark of the first half after Boggess drained a three-pointer. NCCU then went on a 15-3 run, capped by a triple by Foster, to take a 28-21 lead with 7:55 before the break. The Bulldogs responded with a 15-4 spurt and went to the locker room with a slight 36-34 edge.

The second half was controlled by Wingate. In the first six minutes, the Bulldogs outscored NCCU 15-5 to capture a 51-39 cushion at 14:11 following consecutive baskets by Taylor. The margin jumped to as much as 24 points (75-51) when Law hit a pair of free throws with 2:10 left to play.

Wingate committed 20 turnovers to 15 by NCCU, but the Bulldogs made up for their mistakes by hitting 54.2 percent from the field (26-of-48), including 62.5 percent from long range (5-of-8).

The Lady Eagles shot 48.1 percent in the first stanza (13-of-27), but made only 13-of-39 shots, including just 2-for-15 shooting from behind the arc, after intermission.
