Surratt Leads Lady Bulls Over Mars Hill College
January 7, 2003
Charlotte, NC - Johnson C. Smith University (7-3, 1-1 CIAA) took
on the Lady Mountain Lions of Mars Hill College (7-5, 0-0 SAC)
tonight in historic Brayboy Gymnasium. It was a close game, throughout
most of the night; however, the Lady Golden Bulls prevailed in
the end, defeating Mars Hill 77-70.
Joi Surratt, who scored 31 points, five assists and 3 steals
is now just 179 points away from becoming a member of the Golden
Bulls 1,000 point club, and she is just a junior.
“Offensively, Joi was an exciting player tonight, however
she got a lot of help from her teammates, getting the ball to
her when they saw fit, remarked an elated Coach Vanessa Taylor.
“Defensively, I was a little concerned coming into this
game. I knew Mars Hill was very aggressive on the boards, but
our girls were ready tonight, I was very proud of Adrine.”
Ready, is an understatement. Smith out-rebounded Mars Hill 40-28,
getting a lot of help from Adrine Pettaway, who grabbed 14 of
those 40 rebounds in just 13 minutes of play.
The Lady Bulls will begin an 11-game conference run this Thursday
starting with St. Paul’s College on January 9, 2003. Tip-Off
is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Lawrenceville, VA.
