Lady Bulldogs Lose to Lady Golden Bulls
January 14, 2003
BOWIE, MD---Coming off a win against the No.
24 Shaw University Bears on Saturday, the Bowie State University
Bulldogs looking to keep their momentum going and exact a measure
of payback against the team that knocked them out of the 2002
Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
There would be no satisfaction for the Bulldogs, however, as
the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University held them
at bay and won 65-59.
The Bulldogs trailed the entire second half, but continued to
make runs at the Lady Golden Bulls (9-4 overall, 3-2 Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association) and cut the lead to three with 1:51 left
to play on a Leketia Berry jumper. The Golden Bulls would hit
8-of-8 free throws in the final 1:39 to seal the win.
Trailing 41-32 with 14:45 left in the game, the Bulldogs (6-8,
4-5) would use an 8-0 run to close within 41-40. Melanie Harrison
would drain a three-pointer at that juncture to stop the run and
a Krystal Wesson layup moments later would push the advantage
back up to six points.
Neither team shot exceptionally well, but the Lady Golden Bulls
controlled the paint, out-rebounding the Bulldogs 47-35 and blocked
six shots.
Allyson Hardy continued to be the spark plug for the team from
her point guard position as she scored a game-high 22 points and
doled out six assists with eight rebounds and four steals. Freshmen
Kenyail Johnson and Shari Burgess chipped in with 12 and 10 points,
respectively.
Joi Surratt made 2-of-3 three pointers and led the Lady Golden
Bulls with 16 points. Cassandra Penn had 12 points and six assists
while Terri Edwards chimed in with 10 points.
The Bulldogs will host Central State University (OH) on Wednesday
at 6 p.m. in the A.C. Jordan Arena.
