Fayetteville State Downs WSSU In Battle For 1st in CIAA Western Division

January 28, 2003

Fayetteville, NC -You would never have known that Tuesday's game between the Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams and the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos was a battle for first place in the CIAA Western Division, as the two teams combined for 67 turnovers and shot a combined 30% from the floor.

Despite the poor shooting, and constant turnovers, the Lady Broncos were able to pull away in the second half and earn the 61-44 victory. With the win, the Lady Broncos improved to 11-6 overall and 8-1 in the CIAA, while the Lady Rams fall to 11-8 overall and 7-3 in the CIAA. The loss is the first for WSSU in the CIAA Western Division.

While the game was supposed to be a showdown between the two best teams in the Western Division, it proved to be a comedy of errors as the Lady Rams had 19 first half turnovers, and Fayetteville State fared only marginally better, tallying 13 themselves.

The Lady Rams would outshoot the Lady Broncos in the first half, connecting on just eight of their 25 shots, for a frigid 32.0% shooting percentage, as Fayetteville State would muster just 25.0% shooting from the field, hitting eight of 32 first-half shots.

Though the teams were even in field goals made, with eight each, and even combined to go 0-8 from behind the three-point arch, the Lady Broncos would hit nine of sixteen free-throw attempts, while the Lady Rams would not even go to the line once in the first half. The nine-point free throw differential would prove to be the deciding factor in the first half as the home team would carry that lead into the locker room, leading 25-16 at the break.

The second half would prove to be much more even in respect to free throw attempts as the Lady Rams would attempt 16, and the Lady Broncos would attempt 19. However, the Lady Rams failure to hang on to the ball would prove costly as they would turn the ball over 16 more times. The WSSU turnovers, coupled with an even colder 26.7% shooting from the field would help the Lady Broncos slowly pull away, increasing their lead to the eventual deciding margin of 17 points, midway through the second half.

Leading the way for the Lady Rams was Lori Shelby who tallied 10 points on three for eleven shooting in the contest. No other Lady Ram would record double-digit scoring, as senior guard, Phinnie Matthews would come the closest chipping in with seven points and four rebounds.

Pacing the Lady Broncos was All-CIAA First Team guard, Danielle Evans, who recorded 21 points, and benefitted from the Lady Rams charity, going 11 for 16 from the free-throw line. In addition to her offense, Evans added seven rebounds and a steal to her efforts as she led the Lady Broncos to victory. Evans was not alone as center Tonya Bowman added 16 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals in the winning effort.

Commenting on the game, Winston-Salem State Head Coach John Williams had the following to say:

"I thought that the difference in the first half was definitely the free throws. They attempted sixteen free throws as opposed to us, who didn't even go to the line. Because of that, we found ourselves down nine at the half....The second half we never really got it going. Our 19 turnovers in the first half, and 16 in the second is not like us. It is very difficult to win basketball games with that many turnovers."

The Lady Rams return to action on Saturday as they travel to Durham, NC to take on the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central in another CIAA league contest.
