January 21, 2003
RICHMOND, VA, ---The Bowie State University Lady
Bulldogs put themselves in a position to win throughout Tuesday
night's game against the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University,
but could not take advantage of their hard work, losing 77-60.
Free throws proved to be their downfall as they were able to
convert just 13-of-30 attempts from the line while the Lady Panthers
(12-3 overall, 6-1 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association)
sank 31-of-43.
Trailing by double digits at the half, the Bulldogs (6-10, 4-6)
got within a point before the Lady Panthers built the lead back
to 11 points. The Bulldogs would then claw their way back to within
four points with 5:25 to go before the Lady Panthers responded
with a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach once and for all.
Both times, Lady Panther LaToya Taylor would halt the Bulldogs
momentum with back-breaking 3-pointers and would finish with 15
points and eight rebounds.
Bulldogs point guard Allyson Hardy was quiet in the first half,
but came alive in the second half and led the Bulldogs charge
at the Lady Panthers. Her layup and assist to KC Thompson was
part of the 5-2 run that got the Bulldogs to within 46-45 with
14:27 to play. She would finish the game with 16 points, six assists
and three steals.
Thompson added 14 points, including two 3-pointers and Leketia
Berry had another strong game, finishing with a double-double
of 10 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out.
The Lady Panthers balanced attack was led by Pria Stellmacher,
who had 17 points. LaToya Daniels had 13, Sharron Atkins ended
with 12 while Bonica Smith chipped in with 11.
The Lady Bulldogs will be at Columbia Union College on Thursday
at 6 p.m. before heading to the University of Pitt-Johnstown on
Saturday.
