Lady Bulldogs Drop
Tough One
January 9, 2003
BOWIE, MD---A Danielle Evans layup with 1:52
remaining in overtime would turn out to be the game-winner for
the Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos as they staved
off the Bowie State University Bulldogs in the final seconds,
winning 76-75.
Tied at 69 heading into overtime, the Lady Broncos scored the
first five points of the period. The Bulldogs would fight back
to get within a point and a Rachill Robinson rebound with 28 seconds
left in overtime gave the Bulldogs a chance for the game-winning
shot. K.C. Thompson's jumper from the right baseline would sail
long and Evans would grab the rebound to seal the game.
Clawing their way back from a five-point deficit with 2:33 left
in regulation, the Bulldogs (5-7 overall, 3-4 Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association) tied the game on a free throw by Shari Burgess
with 53 seconds left. Following a Lady Broncos turnover, Allyson
Hardy missed a tough layup with nine seconds to go.
Bradsheedah Elohim missed a jumper as time expired and the teams
went into the extra stanza.
Evans would score a game-high 24 points on mainly driving layups,
while Elohim would sink 11-of-20 free throw attempts and finish
with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Tonya Bowman added 12 points and
Alicia Clarke had six steals.
The Bulldogs led by as many as eight in the first half, but saw
the Broncos erase the lead by scoring the first nine points of
the second half. In the first half, the Bulldogs were breaking
the Lady Broncos full-court press with ease, leading to easy baskets
by Leketia Berry, who would finish with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Burgess would pump in 18 points for the Bulldogs, Allyson Hardy
would hit for 13 points and seven assists and Kenyail Johnson
would chip in with 10 points.
The Bulldogs will host the Shaw University Lady Bears on Saturday
at 5 p.m.
