Lady Rams Defeat North Carolina Central 56-48

February 18, 2003

Winston-Salem, NC - Senior night was one to remember for the four Lady Rams playing in the final home games of their careers on Tuesday evening at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum as WSSU defeated the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central by the score of 56-48.

Looking to complete the season sweep of the Lady Eagles, the Lady Rams found themselves down 4-0 early after an early NC Central three-point field goal and free throw. However, over the next two and a half minutes the Lady Rams would go on a 10-2 run and take the lead with 15:34 remaining in the first half.

The Lady Rams benefited from excellent shooting in the first half as they would go 11 for 23 from the floor (47.8%). They would also be the beneficiary of some rather poor shooting on behalf of the Lady Eagles as NC Central would shoot a dismal 8 for 27 from the floor en route to a first-half shooting percentage of 29.6%. These two factors led to the Lady Rams being able to take a narrow five-point lead into the locker room at halftime, leading 26-21.

The second half shooting woes would continue for the Lady Eagles as they again would go 8 for 27 from the floor, while the Lady Rams would do only percentage points better, shooting 37.5% from the floor on 9 for 24 shooting. However, the Lady Rams would do well from the free throw line, and control the paint as the very deep Lady Rams were able to wear down the Lady Eagles who, due to injury, were only able to play eight players.

As was the story in the first meeting between these two teams, it again came down to the inside game of the Lady Rams being too strong and proving to be too much for NC Central to handle as well as the fact that WSSU earned 17 points off of turnovers in the contest. Rhonda Shears led the way for the Lady Rams with 12 points while senior guards Lori Shelby and Phinnie Matthews tallied 11 and 10 points respectively. Fellow seniors Aletha Corpening and Monique Kirkland made their presence felt in other areas besides the scoring column as they would dominate the boards and help to lead the Lady Rams' transition game. The Lady Eagles were paced by Nicole Davis who tallied 14 points and Tiona Beatty who chipped in with 11.

With the victory, the Lady Rams clinch second place in the CIAA Western Division and assure themselves of a first-day bye in the 2003 CIAA Women's Basketball Tournament. They improve to 15-11 overall and 10-6 in the CIAA. The loss drops the Lady Eagles to 6-18 overall and 5-9 in the CIAA.
