City Rivalry Ends
in a 73-66 Emotional Victory; Free Throws Make the Difference
for Catawba
February 17, 2003
Salisbury, NC - What do you do on a night where most activities around
Salisbury are shutdown due to the remains of a wintry mix? Well, Catawba
College women’s basketball team met Livingstone’s in New Trent Gymnasium.
The rescheduled match-up comes from the Winter Storm 2002 that knocked out
power all around the area. A small crowd of snow-goers watched an intense
game where the score went up and down like a roller coaster. Catawba held
a slim 37-32 advantage at the half and an emotional 73-66 victory at the
end.
Livingstone and Catawba played a very emotional game. Former Salisbury
High standout Sherree Gillespie did the tango with the Lady Indians’
Danyel Locklear. Step-for-step, the two wrestled for every loose ball,
hustled on every play, and battled as if it was personal. The spirit of
the two filled the atmosphere and spread amongst their teammates. With
11:05 on the clock, Angela Thomas and Kautelza Richards combined with
Gillespie to go on a 13-5 run in a four-minute time span and hold the lead
for the Lady Blue Bears for much of the second half. Locklear received
help from Ashley Cox and Christina Carmon. The two combined to regain the
lead for the Lady Indians and keep it for the remainder of the game.
The game was balanced with talent as the score was tied four times.
Catawba dominated at the charity stripe connecting 22 of 23. Sherree
Gillespie led the game with 25 points while Kautelza Richards and Angela
Thomas both scored 15. Danyel Locklear (of Catawba) performed a
double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Ashley Cox hit 14 points
while Lynn Morancie and Dorthell Little scored 12 and 10 respectfully.
Livingstone will host Saint Augustine’s College Wednesday night at 5:30
p.m. The Lady Blue Bears will honor its seniors prior the men’s contest.
