Turnovers the Deciding Factor in Fayetteville State 77-72 Victory
Over Livingstone
February 13, 2003
Salisbury, NC – Tonight the Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone
College played host to the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State
University in New Trent Gymnasium. Fayetteville State (16-7 overall)
jumped out to a 20-point lead over Livingstone (7-16 overall)
with 8:05 remaining in the first half. The fiery full court pressure
defense of the Lady Broncos forced 24 turnovers and ended the
half with a dominant 19-point lead, 38-19. Livingstone’s
31 turnovers proved to be the factor that cost LC the game. Fayetteville
State improved their conference record to 11-2 with a 77-72 victory
over Livingstone (3-10 CIAA).
Going into the second half, Livingstone looked to find inspiration
that would get them back into the game and continue their three-game
win streak. Freshman Kautelza Richards, who led the team in the
first half with 10 points, continued to provide for the Lady Blue
Bears as her efforts decreased the teams deficit to 11 points
with 3:19 remaining in the game. Richards continued to force her
will onto the Lady Broncos bringing the Lady Blue Bears within
eight points with 1:54 on the clock. She would receive some help
from junior center Chloe’ McInnis, who chipped in 17 points
and grabbed seven rebounds for the game.
Kautelza Richards kept her squad lit with fire as the Lady Blue
Bears pulled with four points with a pair of free throws with
11 seconds remaining. A career best and game high of 31 points
from Richards would not be enough for Livingstone without a supporting
cast.
Brahsheedah Elohim and Danielle Evans led the way for the Lady
Broncos with 19 points each. Timeka Lawson and Tonya Bowman also
scored in double-figures with 13 and 10 points respectfully.
Livingstone increased its shooting percentage from 35% in the
first half to 60% in the second. LC out-rebounded FSU 44-37 but
the turnovers (LC-31to FSU14) in the game proved the deciding
factor.
Livingstone will travel to Raleigh, NC, Saturday, February 15
to challenge Saint Augustine’s in Emory Gymnasium. Game
time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
