ECSU Balance Too Much for Lady Eagles

February 11, 2003

DURHAM, NC A depleted Elizabeth City State University squad received significant contributions from several Lady Vikings to earn a 52-44 victory over North Carolina Central University at McLendon-McDougald Gym in Durham, NC.

In a low scoring battle, six Lady Vikings hit the scoring column, including a team-best 12 points by Trevia Pittman, nine points by Angelica Dempsey, Kristal McClendon and Hope Riddick, and eight points by Venkia Jones.

NCCU junior Nichole Davis amassed her second double-double of the season with game-highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Natasha Bailey added nine points and nine boards.

ECSU (7-15, 2-11 CIAA) pushed a 27-22 halftime advantage to a 40-29 lead at 10:55 of the second stanza.

NCCU (5-17, 4-8 CIAA) then went on a 9-2 run, which included two triples by Davis, to cut the deficit to 42-38 at 5:45.

After the Lady Vikings pushed the lead to seven points on two occasions, the Lady Eagles again cut the margin to four points, 48-44, with 56 seconds to play.

NCCU, however, missed its final two field goals, committed a turnover and surrendered an offensive rebound on a missed free throw, as ECSU snapped its three-game losing skid.
