Science & Arts (Okla.) Knocks off Top-Seeded Dillard (La.)
73-47 in NAIA Women’s Tourney

JACKSON, Tenn. – The University of Science & Arts of
Oklahoma made its first appearance in the NAIA Division I Women’s
Basketball National Tournament a memorable one on Wednesday morning.
The Drovers, seeded eighth in the second quarter of the tournament
field, rode a strong second half to a 73-47 upset victory over
the quarter’s top seed, Dillard University (Louisiana).
Science & Arts (20-13) hit 17-of-34 second-half field-goal
attempts and held Dillard (26-3) to 8-of-32 (25 percent) shooting
to outscore the Blue Devilettes 40-23 in the half and coast to
the win. For the game Dillard connected on 28.3 percent (17-of-60)
from the field and 3-of-14 (21.4 percent) from the free throw
line. Overall, Science & Arts sank 29-of-59 field goal tries
(49.2 percent) and outrebounded Dillard 45-35.
Five-foot-ten senior forward Katrina Hall hit 10-of-14 from the
field and led Science & Arts with 22 points. Senior forward
Smeitha Hawkins grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds to pace the Drovers
to the edge on the glass. Junior forward Anna Kusnirova, freshman
guard Katy Gilstrap and senior guard Nikki Maloney also reached
double figures in scoring with 12 points each.
Sophomore guard Ebony Owens led Dillard’s offensive attack
with 16 points. The Blue Devilettes’ leading scorer, junior
guard Theresa Samuels (17.8 ppg), was held to 4-of-16 shooting
and scored ten points.
Science & Arts advanced to Friday’s second round to
play the winner of Pikeville College (Kentucky) and The Master’s
College (California) at 10:45 a.m. CST at Oman Arena.
