women defeat Philander Smith in overtime thriller

TUSCALOOSA--- Jennifer Scott land Markeithisa Matthews combined
to score 29 points to lead Stillman (3-0) to a 53-51 victory over
the Philander Smith College women's basketball team (0-2) Monday
night.
Scott scored 16 points on eight of 16 shooting from the field
and Matthews recorded 13 points for Stillman. The Lady Tigers
got off to a slow start, but managed to take a 31-22 lead into
halftime. Matthews led Stillman with nine points on four of eight
shooting in the first half. Scott followed with eight points.
Philander Smith's Felicia Collins led all scorers with 22 points,
making 10 of 20 field goal attempts. April Jackson followed with
eight points and Cristal Newman and Cotrena Baker scored seven
points each.
Philander Smith opened the second half with a 7-2 run to cut
Stillman's lead down to four points at the 15:00 mark. With 4:08
remaining in the second half a April Jackson lay up put Philander
Smith ahead 41-40.
Over the next three minutes the game see-sawed. At the :43 mark
in the second a Matthews three pointer tied the game at 43-43.
In overtime Stillman jumped out to a six point lead as Scott
and Teleshia Odum converted lay-ups for Stillman.
Philander Smith converted four Stillman turnovers into baskets,
cutting the Lady Tiger lead to 51-50. Baker fouled Stillman's
Precious Bradley, sending her to the line with one second remaining
in the game. Bradley made one of two free throws, giving Stillman
a 53-51 victory.
The lady Tigers will return to action Thursday, Dec. 5 as they
travel to New Orleans, LA to face Southern University. Tip off
is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
