Norfolk State Uses
Balanced Attack to Defeat Howard
January 8, 2003
Washington, DC--Ryan Grier and Derrick Smith each scored 17 points and Chakowby Hicks added 16 to lead Norfolk State to a 73-68 win over Howard University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's game at Burr Gymnasium.
The Spartans (5-6 overall, 2-0 in the MEAC) took the lead early and controlled the tempo through much of the game. Grier led the attack in the first half with 12 points as Norfolk State led, 36-28 at intermission.
Smith and Hicks, who combined for 18 points in the second half, took turns scoring baskets that kept the Bison at bay. Each time Howard got within striking distance, they would score a basket that would send the deficit back to double figures.
Howard got a fine effort from senior guard Ron Williamson, who scored a game-high 24 points and junior forward Seye Aluko, who added a career-high 20 but no other Bison player scored in double figures. Leading scorer Kyle Williams was held to 9 points, almost 10 below his season average. It also marked the first time in 33 games that he failed to score in double figures.
