Knight, Ray Lead NCCU
Eagles to Big Win Over St. Augustine's
January 11, 2003
RALEIGH, NC - North Carolina Central University guards Curtis
Knight and Shawn Ray led the Eagles to their largest margin of victory
this season with a 91-68 thrashing of Saint Augustine's College in the
nightcap of the "Carolina Freedom Classic" at the RBC Center in Raleigh,
NC.
Knight amassed a season-high 25 points and a career-best 11
rebounds, including 8 on the offensive glass, for the first
"double-double" effort during his Eagle tenure. Ray collected 20 points
and 6 boards for NCCU (7-7, 3-2 CIAA).
St. Augustine's (9-4, 2-2 CIAA) was topped by center Desmond
Peoples with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while guard Patrick Pope added
14 points.
NCCU committed a season-low seven turnovers to 14 by the Falcons,
resulting in a 23-7 advantage for the Eagles in points off turnovers.
SAC trailed by just six points, 57-51, at the 10:51 mark of the
second half when NCCU rookie sharp-shooter Charles Nickens drained a
three-pointer to cap a 15-4 run and provided the Eagles with a 72-55
cushion at 7:48.
NCCU has now won four of its last five contests, including an
unblemished 2-0 record against CIAA Western Division foes.
Knight's 25 points is his best offensive output since dropping 30
versus Kentucky State on Nov. 24, 2001.
