Bears Run Out of Time Against S.C. State

January 4, 2003

BALTIMORE, MD The last time Morgan State matched-up with South Carolina State the Bears were defeated in overtime. Tonight it happened again.

Thurman Zimmerman poured in 22 of his game-high 24 points in the second half, including crucial baskets down the stretch, as South Carolina State beat Morgan State, 81-79, in overtime Saturday at MSU’s Hill Field House.

Zimmerman was 8-for-12 from the floor and hit 6-for-8 on free throws, scoring five of the Bulldogs’ last 8 points in overtime.

Morgan State (1-11, 0-2 MEAC) cut the lead to 80-79 on two free throws by Cedrick Barrow (Sacramento, CA/Jesuit) with 1:39 remaining in overtime. The Bears ended up having a shot to win the game when junior Nile Patrick (Philadelphia, PA/Fels) rebounded a missed jumper by Dustin Braddick with 36 seconds left. With the game on the line Barrow penetrated SCSU’s defense and found standout shooter Randy Dukes (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast) on the wing for a good look at a three-pointer. Duke’s shot rimmed out and the Bulldogs escaped with the victory.

S.C. State (3-7, 1-0 MEAC) outscored the Bears 8-6 in overtime and controlled the offensive glass for second chance shots. The Bulldogs outrebounded MSU 39-30.

The Bears had four players score double-figures. Randy Dukes and Sam Brand paced the Bears as they combined for 46 points. Dukes finished with 24 points as he shot 10-for-22 from the field and 4-for-10 from beyond the arc. Baltimore native Sam Brand scored a season-high 22 points and knocked down 4-for-12 from three-point territory. Cedrick Barrow finished with 11 points and Aaron Andrews added 10 points with a game-high 8 rebounds.

Dustin Braddick, Moses Malone, and Charles Gilmore had 10 points each and combined for 15 rebounds.

The Bears held a 41-33 lead at the intermission.

Morgan State will be back in action on Monday, January 4th when they host North Carolina A&T University in MSU’s Hill Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
