Maroon Tiger Duo Too Much for Gold Rush

January 7, 2003

The first match-up went into overtime back in early December, the second contest didn’t even come close, as the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse College pulled away late in the game to edge out the visiting Gold Rush from Xavier (La.) University, 82-66.

As has been the story all season, the guard duo of Brandon Childs and Quincy Bell led the Maroon Tigers to victory as both players topped the 20-point mark with Bell’s 26 and Childs’ 23 respectively.

As usual the Maroon Tigers broke out to a slow start, and went into the intermission down by one, 29-30.

The Gold Rush led by power forward Tim Greene (14 points) started quickly in the second half to expand their lead to four, 36-32. But when Quincy Bell was fouled attempting a 3-pointer on the next trip down the floor, making all three attempts, followed by a dunk by center Gerald Cannon (7 points), the Maroon Tigers were on there way to closing the door on the Gold Rush.

Down the stretch the Maroon Tigers were strong at the free throw line, and the iron was unkind as the Gold Rush tried to come back by shooting behind the arc. But they were unsuccessful, finishing just 3-13 from three-point range.

The Maroon Tigers will continue their climb back to a .500 record when they face off with the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University on Thursday, January 9, 2003. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
