Balanced Attack Lifts JSU Tigers to Victory

January 13, 2003

(JACKSON, Miss.) One thing JSU head coach Andy Stoglin has stressed all season is that it will take a total team effort to win the conference crown.

Jackson State seems to have embraced that idea as the Tigers clinch their third consecutive conference victory with an 86-66 win over Southern University.

The Tigers (4-9, 3-1 SWAC) were led by Tim Henderson who had a game-high 22 points. Ishmael Joyce hit four three-pointers en route to 20 points while Aaron Gilliom finished with 13. Adrain Terry added nine points and four assists.

Southern (2-8, 0-4 SWAC) was led by Tim Johnson and Jarvis Vaughn, who each scored 13 points. Pedro Cipriano added 12 while Brian Johnson finished with nine points.

The game marks the second straight game the Tigers have out-rebounded an opponent, winning the battle of the boards 42-35. Cliff Walker had a game-high 11 rebounds while Tim Henderson had six.

Jackson State used 18 points off 12 Jaguar turnovers to build an 41-26 lead at intermission. The second half was filled with shots as both teams combined for 85 points, including 10 three-pointers (Jackson State 6, Southern 4).

The Tigers shot 49.2 percent (31-63) from the field hitting 12-of-21 of their three-point attempts. Jackson State held the Jaguars to 34.5 percent from the floor, including 4-of-16 from long range.

The Tigers will now prepare for this weekend as they travel to Texas to face Texas Southern (Saturday, January 18) and Prairie View (Monday, January 20).
