J.C. Smith Stops Rams' Six Game Win Streak; Defeats WSSU 70-48

Winston-Salem, NC - Sometimes you have it, sometimes you don't...sometimes you have it in the first half and don't in the second half. That is exactly what happened to the Winston-Salem State University men's basketball team on Saturday evening at the CE Gaines Center as they had their six-game win streak broken by the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University.
The Rams led by as many as 11 points in the first half, and looked to be in complete control of the game, but CIAA First-Team All-Star Marco Spears helped the Golden Bulls to fight their way back. A pair of deep jumpers and a driving lay-up followed by a free-throw helped JCSU tie the game up and eventually pull ahead.
The half would come to a close with the Rams trailing JCSU by only two points at 33-31, however that is as close as the Rams would get the rest of the way.
Three straight turnovers for the Rams to start the second half and four missed jump shots later, and the rout was on. The Golden Bulls would hit 13 of their 25 second-half field goal attempts (52.0%) en route to the 22-point victory, as they outscored the Rams 37-17 in the second half of play.
Leading the way for Johnson C. Smith was Marco Spears who not only recorded 23 points but pulled down six rebounds, dished out three assists, and tallied two blocks and five steals while turning the ball over only twice. The First Team All-CIAA member put the Golden Bulls on his back and carried them past the sluggish Rams.
Pacing the Rams was Darnell Gregory who turned in his best overall performance of the season in the losing effort as he scored a team-high 11 points.
With the loss the Rams fall to 11-9 overall (6-3 CIAA), as the Golden Bulls improve to 14-5 overall (7-2 CIAA). WSSU looks to get back into the win column on Tuesday as they will travel to Fayetteville State in another important CIAA Western Division game.
