Smith Edges Out St. Augustine's College, 68-67
January 21, 2003
CHARLOTTE, NC - Johnson C. Smith got away with a win against pesky
St. Augustine's College, 68-67. Controlling the boards seemed to be a big
problem for the Bulls, being out-rebounded 41 to 23.
With 10 minutes left in the game, the Bulls saw a six point lead turn into a
tied game, and an eventual four point deficit. With 10.5 seconds left in the
game, the scoreboard read 68-67 in favor of the Bulls, though the Flacons
had possession. A costly turnover gave the Bulls possession wit h6.6 seconds
on the clock. A foul sent Went Hinton to the line shooting two. He would
miss both free-throws and see the Falcons go down the court with 5 seconds,
and for a second thought the game was over. However, the shot was off, the
game clock expired and the Bulls would win the game 68-67.
Benjamin Chasten came through big for the Gold & Blue scoring 21 points. He
had great help from Marco Spears scoring 17 points, 10 rebounds, four
blocks, 3 steals, and one assist.
Like the Lady Bulls, Smith begins a five game road trip beginning with rival
Winston-Salem Sate University. This Saturday, January 25, 2003. Tip-Off is
scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Winston-Salem, NC.
